“ Fingerprint Spectrum” Is A Questionable Word GroupLuo Xu Abstract Traditional Chinese medicines, including the materials and the patent medicines, are difficult to identify and their quality is even more difficult to assess in a modern way. This is an urgent problem in traditional Chinese pharmacology. Influenced by the administrative experience of some developed countries in herbal medicines, an upsurge in using modern analytical methods, such as HPLC, FTIR, HRMS, but mainly the first, to take various spectra for identification of T.C.M. has recently been in the making. This enthusiasm is to be amply affirmed. But soon afterwards some researchers began to add the word group “fingerprint spectrum” to the name of the spectrum actually taken to form another word group, such as “infrared spectrum fingerprint spectrum”. This kind of wording is incoherent. In this paper, a proposal of adopting the word “characterstics”, which has the advantages of being geared to the actual circumstances, clearness and plainness, instead of the word group “fingerprint spectrum”is put forward. And the progress of researches made in the recent 20 years on the quality control of T.C.M. is briefly analyzed.Key words HPLC fingerprint, Fingerprint, Profile
